The problem

"Free" and "crippled" get used as synonyms a lot. The assumption goes: if you're not paying, you're stuck with a stripped-down toy version that can't really do anything useful — so why bother learning it until you upgrade?

Everything covered so far in this series — web search, memory across chats, Artifacts, reading photos and PDFs, voice dictation — already proves that assumption wrong. None of it needed Pro.

The solution

The free plan is a real, functional version of Claude — not a demo. The actual difference between Free and Pro isn't which features exist, it's mostly about how much and how fast:

Think of it less as "free = limited features" and more as "free = a smaller usage budget, same core toolkit."

How it looks on a tablet

  1. Everything from earlier in this series — search, memory, Artifacts, file uploads, dictation — works exactly the same on Free as it does on Pro
  2. The place you'll actually notice a difference is message volume: heavy daily use is where free limits show up first
  3. If you only chat occasionally, you may rarely notice a limit at all

The trick

Don't upgrade based on a feature you assume is missing — check first. Exact limits and current plan details change over time, so the most reliable place to confirm what's included right now is claude.ai/pricing or the Claude Help Center, not general assumptions (including ours).

The takeaway

"Limited AI" undersells what the free plan actually offers. The core capabilities are the same toolkit — what changes with Pro is mostly headroom, not access.
