For a quick question, you want a quick answer. But for something genuinely hard — a tricky math problem, a multi-step logic puzzle, a decision with several moving parts — a fast, snap-judgment answer isn't always the right one. Most people assume AI just answers instantly either way, good or bad.

Claude has an Extended thinking mode that spends more time reasoning through a problem before answering — available on the free plan, with usage limits like everything else on free. You can see Claude work through the steps, not just receive a final answer out of nowhere.

Example: Instead of "what's a good price for this," try "walk through the trade-offs and then give me your recommendation." Extended thinking is built for exactly that kind of question.

Save it for questions that actually need it. Extended thinking takes longer and uses more of your usage budget than a normal reply — flip it on for genuinely hard problems, and leave it off for quick chat.
