The problem

Claude's default tone is fine, but it's not always what a specific task needs. A quick Slack-style reply and a formal client email shouldn't sound the same — yet retyping "be more formal" or "keep it short" into every single chat gets old fast.

The solution

Claude has built-in Style presets you can switch between in any chat — Concise, Explanatory, Formal, and more — that change how responses are written without changing what Claude knows or can do. Pick one from the style menu, and every reply in that chat follows it.

Common everyday uses:

• Formal for emails to clients or your boss
• Concise when you just want the answer, not the explanation
• Explanatory when you're learning something new and want the reasoning shown

Exception to flag: fully custom styles generated from your own writing samples are a newer, evolving feature, and availability has varied by plan and region as Anthropic rolls it out. If you don't see the "create custom style" option, the built-in presets below still work the same way.

How it looks on a tablet

1. Open the "+" or tools menu in the chat box
2. Tap "Use style" (sometimes shown as a feather icon)
3. Pick a preset — it applies for the rest of that conversation

The trick

Styles change delivery, not content. If you want Claude to always remember your job, project, or preferences — that's a separate setting (profile preferences / instructions), and it stacks together with whatever Style you pick.

The takeaway

You don't need a paid plan to stop getting the same generic tone every time. The preset Styles alone cover most everyday tone-switching needs.
